Ranbir is born on 28-09-1982 in Mumbai. His father's name is Rishi Kapoor (deceased) and his mother's name is Neetu Kapoor. Both of his parents are Film actor in Hindi cinema.

He is the grandson of famous actor and director Raj Kapoor. His elder sister's name is Riddhima Kapoor. Karishma and Kareena are his first cousins.

He is Educated from Bombay Scottish School in Mahim. He was excellent in sports but also has little interest in academics.

In his initial years, Ranbir was close to his mother but had a weird relationship with his father. After examination of his tenth class, he works for his father as an assistant director for the film Aa Ab Laut Chalen (1999), from there he developed a closed heart bond with him.
